ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a neuromuscular disorder that affects motor neurons or large nerve cells and their axons that reach from the brain to the spinal cord and muscles throughout the body. Lou Gehrig, the famous baseball player, was diagnosed with ALS, which is commonly referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease.” As the disease progresses voluntary muscle movements are affected, with total paralysis occurring in the later stages; however, the person’s mind and ability to think remains unaffected. For more information about ALS please contact Project ALS at www.projectals.org or by phone at 1-800-603-0270. All proceeds from the 5K Beach H.O.P.E. Run/Walk will be donated to Project ALS to advance research for this progressive disease. Proceeds will be donated in honor of Paul Litman from Greenville, SC and Laura Williams from Folly Beach, SC.
